INDONESIA UPDATED. Thailand optimis bisa mengalahkan Indonesia di laga final SEA Games 2013, Sabtu (21/12) malam waktu Myanmar. Pelatih Thailand, Kiatisuk Senamuang, bahkan mengaku kalau skuad asuhannya sudah berlatih adu penalti demi final di Zeyar Thiri Stadium.

"Kami akan terus menekan pertahanan mereka dan mengandalkan kecepatan untuk membongkar pertahanan. Fisik mereka pasti tidak lebih baik dibanding kami karena Indonesia harus bermain lewat adu penalti untuk menundukkan Malaysia," sahut Kiatisuk. 

"Babak penalti? Tidak masalah. Sebenarnya kami sudah mempersiapkan diri selama sebulan untuk menghadapi penalti di Chiang Mai."

Thailand merasa percaya diri karena di fase grup sempat mengalahkan skuad U-23, 4-1. Pelatih yang akrab disapa "Zico dari Thailand" itu memprediksi kalau pemain Thailand akan bisa kembali menciptakan gol cepat seperti saat menaklukkan Indonesia.

"Thailand akan bermain dengan gayanya sendiri," kata Kiatisuk. "Kami harap bisa mencetak gol cepat agar bisa memenangkan pertandingan dengan mudah. Saya yakin tim ini bisa menundukkan Indonesia di 90 menit."

Thailand: Let's Destroy the Indonesian Squad!

THAILAND UPDATED. Thailand Under-23 coach Kiatisuk Senamuang is confident that his team will end their SEA Games title drought when they take on Indonesia in the final at the Zeyar Thiri Stadium on Saturday night.

Thailand were eliminated in the group stages in the last two tournaments in 2009 and 2011 but they will be the overwhelming favourites to regain the men’s football title after defeating Singapore 1-0 in the semi-finals on Thursday.

Kiatisuk’s men have been the hot favourites since starting their Group B campaign with aplomb – beating Timor-Leste 3-1. They then whipped Indonesia 4-1 before drawing 1-1 with Myanmar and 0-0 with Cambodia.

The Thai legend said that his team had done well to advance to the final and that they are on the right track to reclaim the gold medal.

‘’Our aim is to win the gold medal in the SEA Games,’’ said the 40-year-old coach fondly called Zico.

‘’However, we still have to work hard to win it ... the fight is not over yet and our win against Indonesia in the first round is irrelevant.’’

Indonesia, meanwhile will try to end their SEA Games jinx after going more than two decades without winning the gold in the biennial tournament.

Indonesia coach Rahmad Darmawan has urged his players to continue showing the same kind of consistency that has seen them come this far.

“It will be a hard-fought match but I believe we have it in us to beat Thailand ... if we play according to our game plan,” said Rahmad.

Thailand One Win Away From Football Gold

THAILAND UPDATED. Kiatisak's men to meet Indonesia in decider. Thailand will be heavy favourites to regain the men's football title after defeating Singapore 1-0 in the semi-finals at the SEA Games on Thursday night.

Praweenwat Boonyong's 23rd minute penalty kick sent Thailand to their first final since 2007.

In tomorrow's final, Kiatisak Senamuang's men will meet Indonesia who stunned Malaysia 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in yesterday's other semi-final.

Thailand hammered the Indonesians 4-1 in the first round of the Myanmar Games.

Thailand were eliminated in the last two tournaments in 2009 and 2011 and Kiatisak is confident that his men will end the title drought.

''Our aim is to win the gold medal,'' said Kiatisak.

''But we have to work hard to win the title. Our win against Indonesia in the first round is irrelevant.''

At Zeyar Thiri Stadium in the country's new capital, Singapore were the better side in the opening minutes but once Thailand found their rhythm they dominated for long periods.

The Thais broke the deadlock after 23 minutes when Thai-Swiss midfielder Charyl Chappuis won a penalty after he was tripped in the area.

Bangkok Glass FC defender Praweenwat made no mistake from the spot.

The Young Lions then piled the pressure on Thailand but failed to break their defence marshalled by captain Theerathon Bunmathan.

Thailand started the second half strongly forcing Singapore goalkeeper Muhammad Mahbud to make a couple of saves.

But the game then became uneventful and the Thais chose to defend their lead.

The match became lively again in the final 10 minutes as Singapore threw everything at Thailand but could not beat goalkeeper Kawin Thamsatchanan.

In yesterday's first semi-final, Indonesia beat Malaysia 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 stalemate, avenging their defeat to their arch-rivals in the 2011 final in Jakarta.

The game finished 1-1 in normal time with a late goal from forward Thamil Arasu cancelling out a spectacular strike from Bayu Gatra after 30 minutes of a game which the Indonesians dominated.

Extra-time was a dour affair with both teams flagging on the large pitch.

The win was sweet revenge for the Indonesians, who lost on penalties to their neighbours in the final of the 2011 Games.

The Malaysians were bidding for their third straight SEA Games gold in the showpiece event of the hotly contested competition.

Indonesia, who broke the hearts of local fans with a narrow 1-0 win over Myanmar to progress from the group stage at their expense, will play Thailand in the final of the under-23 tournament.

Against Thailand tomorrow, Indonesia will try to end their SEA Games hoodoo after going more than two decades without winning gold in the biennial tournament.

Kiatisuk: It Will Not Be An Easy Match for Indonesia.

THAILAND UPDATED. Kiatisuk anticipates tough match in final despite victory in group stage.

Thailand will be bidding to end a barren run in men's football when they meet Indonesia in the final on Saturday.

Thailand completely dominated the SEA Games' men's football when they won the title eight times in a row from 1993-2007. But they were embarrassingly eliminated in the first round in the last two tournaments.

Coach Kiatisuk Senamuang's men are heavy favourites against the Indonesians at Zayar Thriti Stadium in Myanmar's new capital as the Thais thrashed them 4-1 in the group stage earlier in the 2013 Games.

Kiatisuk should know how to win the title as he won several gold medals during his playing days. He was on target when Thailand beat Myanmar in the 1993 final to begin their eight-title run.

However, he warned his players not to underestimate Indonesia in today's showdown.

"It will not be an easy match," he said yesterday.

"Although we beat them 4-1 in the first round, today's game will be different. I hope my players will be eager to beat them again. We must do our best and not make mistakes. I believe we can win the gold medal."

Injured Pakorn Prempak is definitely out while 'Messi Jay' Chanathip Songkrasin and Thai-Swiss Charyl Chappuis need late fitness tests.

Kiatisuk, affectionately called by his nickname 'Zico', welcomes back Pokklaw Anan who was sidelined due to injury in Thailand's 1-0 win against Singapore in the semi-finals on Thursday.

Kiatisuk's men are captained by defender Theerathon Bunmathan, a starter for the full national team. They also have other full national team players, including goalkeeper Kawin Thamasatchanan.

As for Indonesia, they have improved considerably after the defeat against Thailand.

They eliminated hosts Myanmar with a 1-0 win in their final group game and stunned defending champions Malaysia on penalties following a 2-2 draw in the semi-finals.

The Indonesians are led by Alfin Tuasalamony, Andri Ibo and Diego Robbie Michiels who could break the Thais' hearts.

Thailand Football Team Closer to Gold Dream

THAILAND UPDATED. Thailand under-23 football team beat Singapore 1-0 at Zayar Thiri Stadium, Nay Pyi Taw on Thursday to reach the final of men football match at 27th SEA Games.

Thailand were given a penalty kick after 23 minutes which Boon Yong did not make any mistake to take for the only winning goal.

Singapore sought an equalizer, playing roughly and putting Thailand in defensive position.

After 82 minutes Suhaimi had chance to shoot close but Thailand' s keeper Thamsatchanan neatly caught it.

In the final Thailand will play Indonesia whom they beat 4-1 in the group stage while the semi-final losers Singapore and the defending champion Malaysia will jostle for the third place on Saturday.

This squad's spoilt for choice in the attacking department. Thai coach Kiattisak can change his approach to undermine any style of defensive line.

Thailand targets 110 golds in SEA Games

May not be enough to offset Myanmar's advantage in local sports.

Thailand has taken a strong lead in the medals table at the 27th SEA Games with 59 golds. Their nearest rival is Vietnam with 43, followed by Indonesia with 39.

Many more golds are still to come says Thailand's chief of delegation Thana Chaiprasit. "We are highly likely to win 100-110 gold medals " he said.

"We have done well overall " Mr Thana said. "We have failed to meet the target in some sports and done better than expectations in others."

Interestingly, 100 or more gold medals may not be enough to be the overall leader by the end of the Games on Sunday, Mr Thana said.

Host Myanmar are likely to win a lot of medals in obscure local sports such as vovinam and kempo. Thus, the international sports table should be the one to watch and Thailand is expected to dominate.

Yesterday was another big gold medal day for the Thai athletes Attention was focused on Thai sprinter Neeranuch Klomdee who won her eighth successive gold medal in the women's 4x100m relay

The women's 4x100m relay team successfully defended their title in 44.42sec, ahead of Vietnam (44.99) and Indonesia (45.88).

Neeranuch will also compete in the women's 100m today and she hopes to win another gold medal in her final SEA Games appearance

''It will be my last SEA Games,'' said the 33-year-old Neeranuch,  who hopes to take part in next year's Asian Games before retiring.

Thailand also claimed the men's 4x100m relay crown and three other titles in athletics yesterday following a slow start on the opening day of track and field on Sunday.

Thailand yesterday continued their supremacy in sepak takraw, winning two more gold medals in the men's and women's regu events.

There are 10 events in sepak takraw at the Myanmar Games with each country allowed to take part in a maximum six events. Thailand have won five of their six events. Thailand, who had won in the men's and women's team events and men's hoop takraw, are hot favourites to triumph in their last event – the women's doubles.

Meanwhile in Yangon, the Thai football team, who had already qualified for the semi-finals dominated for long periods but could not break Cambodia's tight defence with 'Messi Jay' Chanathip Songkrasin and Chananan Pombubpha squandering several chances.

The match ended in a 0-0 draw It was Cambodia's first point of the football tournament. Thailand ended up at the top of its group with eight points after Indonesia upset host Myanmar 1-0 yesterday.

Neeranuch Claims Eighth Gold in Relay

THAILAND UPDATED.Thai sprinter Neeranuch Klomdee won her eighth successive gold medal in the women's 4x100m relay at the 27th SEA Games yesterday.
Thailand also claimed the men's 4x100m relay crown and three other titles in athletics yesterday following a slow start on the opening day of track and field on Sunday.

The women's 4x100m relay team successfully defended their title in 44.42sec, ahead of Vietnam (44.99) and Indonesia (45.88).

It was Thailand's 16th straight win and 18th overall in the event.

The Thai quartet _ Neeranuch, Phatsorn Jaksuninkorn, Tassaporn Wannakit and Nongnuch Sanrat _ broke their own record of 44.50sec set at the 2011 Games in Indonesia.

''We were under pressure as defending champions. It's a huge relief although we were confident that we would win,'' Neeranuch said. ''It's my eighth straight win in the event. I have won every time I competed in this event.''

The Suphan Buri athlete said Thailand had been dominant in the discipline because of their great baton-passing tactics and a big pool of runners.

Neeranuch will also compete in the women's 100m today and she hopes to win another gold medal in her final SEA Games appearance.

''It will be my last SEA Games,'' said the 33-year-old Neeranuch, who hopes to take part in next year's Asian Games before retiring.

In the men's 4x100m relay, Thai runners _ Ruttanapon Sowan, Aphisit Promkaew, Jirapong Meenapra and Suppachai Chimdee _ took gold in 39.75sec, beating Singapore (39.79) and Indonesia (40.15).

It was Thailand's 23rd title overall in the event after they came in fourth at the 2011 tournament.

Panwat Gimsrang won in the women's hammer throw (54.96m) while Mingkamon Koomphon got bronze in the same event.

In her second SEA Games, Panwat broke Thailand's record of 51.19m with the SEA Games record being 56.0m.

Wassana Winatho was first in heptathlon with Sunisa Khotseemueng third.

In the men's pole vault, Kreeta Sintawacheewa took gold and Sompong Saombankuay bronze.

In chess, Thailand (Supat Lekcham, Nut Sutthithamwasi, Arch Boonruamboon and Worathep Timsri) won gold in the men's traditional team blitz competition.

In weightlifting, Thailand took two golds in the women's 69kg and men's 94kg.

Boonatee Klasikit won in the women's 69kg with lifts of 100kg in snatch and 125kg for a total of 225kg.

In the men's 94kg, Sarat Sumpradit managed 158kg in snatch and 194kg in clean and jerk for 352kg.

In swimming, Patarawadee Kittiya won Thailand's last gold medal in the pool at the 27th SEA Games with her victory in the women's 200m butterfly.

In all, Thailand claimed seven golds, eight silvers and eight bronzes in the swimming tournament.

The Games end on Sunday.

Thailand chase 110 gold medals

Thailand are upbeat about their chance of reaching their goal of winning 110 gold medals at the 27th SEA Games.

''We are highly likely to win 100-110 gold medals,'' Thailand's chief of delegation Thana Chaiprasit said.

Thailand have enjoyed a gold medal haul over the past few days of the biennial event.

''We have done well overall,'' he said. ''We have failed to meet target in some sports and done better than expectation in others.''

Thai wushu exponents are so far Thailand's most disappointing team. They targeted two golds but failed to secure a single title.

Thana said Thailand may not be able to win the overall title as hosts Myanmar are likely to win a lot of golds in vovinam and kempo.

But he believed his team would be the best side in international sports.

He said Myanmar had done a great job in organising their first SEA Games in 44 years while Vietnam had made fast progress in international sports.

Jirapong Surges to Victory in 100 Meter

THAILAND UPDATED. Thailand's Jirapong Meenapra became the fastest man at 27th SEA Games when he won gold in the men's 100m yesterday.
But Thailand will have to wait for at least another two years to claim the women's 100m title as their runners could only take silver and bronze.

At Wunna Theikhdi Stadium, Jirapong, from Surat Thani, crossed the finish line in 10.48sec, ahead of Indonesia's Isawandi (10.51) and Muhammad Jamal of Singapore (10.55).

"I am really happy although my time was much slower than my personal best of 10.35," said Jirapong, who became Thailand's first 100m winner since Watchara Sondee in 2005.

"I was in lane five and was sandwiched by Indonesian runners in lane four and lane six. That made me feel uncomfortable but I managed to win."

In his first SEA Games, the 20-year-old Thai, who only started running the distance three years ago, will also compete in the men's 200m.

With his success in Myanmar, he now eyes a top-three finish in the 100m at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.

In the women's 100m, Vietnam's Thi Huong Vu claimed gold in 11.59sec, comfortably beating Thais Neeranuch Klomdee (11.85) and Tassaporn Wannakit (11.91).

Neeranuch, the last Thai to win the event in 2003, said the 27-year-old Vietnamese, who won silver at the 2010 Asian Games, had been one of the continent's top sprinters in the past few years.

"She is a great runner and deserves the win," Neeranuch said.

The 33-year-old veteran has represented Thailand for 16 years and this will be her last SEA Games. She aims to take part in next year's Asian Games before retiring.

Wassana Winatho claimed her second gold of the Myanmar Games with her win in the women's 400m hurdles. She crossed the line in 58.85sec to defeat Vietnam's Thi Lan Quach (58.93) and Singapore's Dipna Lim Prasad (59.96).

Wassana, who had won gold in the heptathlon, said she was unsure if she would be fit for today's long jump because of back pain.

In the men's javelin throw, Peerchet Jantra took home the title with a Games record of 76.30m, ahead of compatriot Hussadin Rodmanee, who managed 75.46m.

Distance running specialist Boonthung Srisung won silver in the men's 5000m. He clocked 14.21min behind gold medallists Van Lai Nguyen of Vietnam who crossed the line in 14.19min.

Thailand Volleyball Team Sets Sights on 10th Title

THAILAND UPDATED. The Thai women's volleyball team aims to win its 10th straight title without dropping a set at the SEA Games.
Asian champions Thailand are hot favourites and coach Kiattipong Radchatakriengkrai wants to win the title in style.

"I am confident that we can win our 10th successive gold medal without losing a set," said Kiattipong, who guided his team to win the Asian crown this year.

World No.12 Thailand have beaten Malaysia and Vietnam 3-0 in their first two games in Myanmar in the preliminary round.

They will meet the hosts today and Indonesia tomorrow. The top two teams after the round-robin stage will meet again in the final on Saturday.

Vietnam are considered Thailand's most dangerous opponents.

Kiattisak has given chances to fringe players although his first-team stars have played some roles in the opening two matches.

Meanwhile, cyclist Wilaiwan Kunlapha won gold in the women's road race 128km individual event in 4:11:17hr.

The silver medal was also won by a Thai, Jutatip Maneephan in 4:15:07hr while Vietnamese Nguyen Thi That got bronze.

Soccer Stars Confident Ahead of Semis

THAILAND UPDATED. The Thai men's football team arrived in Nay Pyi Taw from Yangon yesterday brimming with confidence that they will reach the final.
In tomorrow's semi-finals, Thailand will take on Singapore and defending champions Malaysia will meet Indonesia.

After arriving in Myanmar's new capital following a five-hour road trip, Thailand coach Kiatisak Senamuang said Singapore were strong in defence.

''It will not be an easy match,'' Kiatisak said. ''They are dangerous on the counter-attack and their striker Sahil Suhaimi has scored three goals.

''But we will be at full strength and I am confident that we will win.''

Only Pakorn Prempak is nursing a slight injury and Thailand will welcome back some of their suspended players, including captain Teerathon Bunmathan.

Kiatisak rested several key players in their scoreless draw against Cambodia in the last group match on Monday.

Thailand are desperate to regain the SEA Games title they won eight times in a row until 2007. They have since been knocked out in the first rounds in the previous two Games.

In futsal, the Thai men will meet Vietnam in the final on Friday after a 8-1 win against hosts Myanmar yesterday.

Suphawut 'The Futsal Wizard' Thuenklang scored a hat-trick and Thailand were much too strong for Myanmar, who reached the semi-finals for the first time.

Sepak Takraw Teams Seal Glorious Double

THAILAND UPDATED. In the women's regu _ each side has one team of three players _ round-robin tournament, Thailand beat Laos 21-16, 21-14 in their final match for their fourth straight win.

Wanwisa Jankaen, Sasiwimol Janthasit, Kaewjai Pumsawangkaew, Sunthari Rupsung and Payom Srihongsathey helped Thailand win the event for a seventh successive time.

Myanmar took silver while Laos and Vietnam were joint third.

In the men's event, also a round-robin competition, Thailand beat Malaysia 21-16, 21-8 in their last match for their fourth win in a row.

It was the Thai men's fourth straight gold medal and 11th overall.

The Thai players were Pornchai Kaokaew, Thanawat Chumsena, Siriwat Sakha, Sahachat Sakhoncharoen and Pattarapong Yupadee. Malaysia were second while Myanmar and Laos third.

There are 10 events in sepak takraw at the Myanmar Games with each country allowed to take part in a maximum six events. Thailand have won five of their six events.

Thailand, who had won in the men's and women's team events and men's hoop takraw, are hot favourites to triumph in their last event _ the women's doubles.

Thawat Kumutpongpanich, a Thai sepak takraw official, said Thailand should meet their six gold medal target.

"Having won five gold medals, the women's doubles event should not be too tough for us," he said.

While Thailand have been the dominant force in Southeast Asia for years, Thawat said it would be tougher at the Asian Games because several countries have improved considerably.

"South Korea are probably stronger than Malaysia," he said. "The Koreans have trained very hard and learned a lot from us."

There are six gold medals up for grabs at the 2014 Asian Games to be held in South Korea and Thawat said the hosts were good enough to win some.

Thais Surge Ahead of Myanmar in Medals Ahead of Football Game

MYANMAR UPDATED. Thailand surged ahead of Myanmar in the SEA Games 2013 medals standings today just before the two countries met in a huge men’s football match on Saturday night.
 
Myanmar has led the medal tally since the beginning of the competition, but Thailand stormed ahead today and is in first place at the moment with a total of 33 golds, compared to second-place Myanmar’s 31. Indonesia is third with 30 and Vietnam fourth with 29.

In the early men’s football match, Indonesia and Timor Leste played to a 0-0 draw.

Thailand and Myanmar are at the top of the Group B standings, with both teams having won their first two matches of the tournament.

By 5am this morning hundreds of die-hard fans were at the stadium in anticipation of the much-anticipated match. The numbers of fans had grown into the thousands by 10am, hoping to buy the last batch of tickets being offered today.

The stadium was absolutely packed three hours before the start of the match, with fans on both sides decked out in their teams’ colours and eager for the crucial match to begin.

Security officials estimated up to 100,000 fans could make their way to the stadium today.

The match is now underway, and reports say it is tied at 1-1. Myanmar scored first in the 33rd minute on a back header from Nay Lin Tun, but Thailand has scored the equalizer to tie the score at 1-1.

Myanmar & Thailand Draw 1-1 Men’s Football SEA Games

MYANMAR UPDATED. Host Myanmar and Thailand played to a 1-1 draw in a crucial Group B men’s football match at the SEA Games 2013 on Saturday night before a huge crowd at Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon.

Myanmar scored first, taking the lead in the 33rd minute on a back header from Nay Lin Tun on a freekick, and sending the home fans into a frenzy.

The host team lost midfielder Kyi Lin in the 23rd minute, a cause for concern for the Myanmar team, especially with Thailand coming close to scoring on several occasions early in the match.

Thailand would later score the equaliser, and with the game tied at 1-1, neither team could score again.

The draw leaves the two teams still at the top of the Group B standings, both having won their first two matches of the Games.

The Thais play Cambodia on Monday, while Myanmar plays Indonesia the same day.

Fans began pouring into the stadium area about 5am this morning in anticipation of the huge match, with thousands on hand by 10am.

Security officials estimated the crowd could reach 100,000 at the stadium today.

This afternoon, Indonesian contingent began pursuit of Myanmar in SEA Games medal in 2013. Having dropped one rank to third on Saturday (14/12) morning, at 1:10 pm in Myanmar, Indonesia has been able to move back to Vietnam in both board positions standings with 24 gold, 30 silver and 20 bronze.

Indonesia has a difference of 3 gold from Myanmar are currently still at the top of the standings with 27 gold , 26 silver and 22 bronze.
