Myanmar Beats Cambodia to Begin SEA Games Football Match

Yangon_Myanmar. The Myanmar football team embraced a brilliant start by giving a 3-0 drubbing to Cambodia at Yangon's Thuwunna Stadium on Saturday evening.

The whole stadium was red and filled with Myanmar supporters wearing the home team's red-color suits.

The Myanmar team came to the pitch with the usual under-23 line- up with the change of a few young faces.

Both teams' coaches are from South Korea and the referee is also a South Korean referee who seems to judge on the two fighting South Korean coaches.

Myanmar's Zaw Min Tun headed the ball from a corner kick into a far-away corner, scoring the first goal home at 16th minute.

Kyaw Ko Ko, Myanmar's outstanding star, headed again between two defenders the ball coming from midfielder Kyi Lin to add the second goal at 34th minute.

At 46th minute, just the start of the second half, Kyaw Ko Ko scored his second, the team's third.

Myanmar will play against Timor Leste and Cambodia will compete with Indonesia on Monday in the second match of the group stage.

Myanmar Off to Perfect Start in SEA Games

The hosts began their campaign in emphatic fashion after beating Cambodia 3-0 in their first group stage game.

Hosts Myanmar got off to a perfect start in the SEA Games as they beat Cambodia 3-0 in the opening game of Group B at the Thuwanna YTC Stadium in Yangon on Saturday evening.

The result puts Myanmar in first place ahead of Thailand on goal difference, who beat Timor Leste 3-1 earlier in the day.

Cambodia came closest to breaking the deadlock after 13 minutes when Thierry Chantha Bin’s short pass reached Sok Pheng, but the striker only managed to hit the bar.

It proved costly as four minutes later, Myanmar took the lead when Si Thu Aung’s corner kick reached centre back Zaw Min Tun, who headed the ball past goalkeeper Sou Yati.

The hosts then doubled their lead in the 35th minute when Kyi Lin’s cross from the right was headed in by Kyaw Ko Ko.

Any thoughts of a comeback by Cambodia disappeared as soon as the second half began as Kyaw scored his second goal of the game in the 47th minute.

Kyaw's initial effort was blocked by a Cambodian defender on the goal line, but substitute Thein Than Win passed the rebound to the striker to score in his second attempt.

Myanmar coach Park Seong Hwa was contented with his team’s victory, and already has his eyes set on the next game against Timor Leste.

“I am satisfied with the team performance, and I will try my best for the next game,” he said.

“Timor Leste in appearance is weak, but they have good individual players, so there is a lot of preparation to be done.”

Cambodia Volleyball Players Fire in Friendlies

CAMBODIA UPDATED. Cambodia’s national volleyball team showed some medal potential during pre-SEA Games friendlies held at the indoor hall of Olympic Stadium over the weekend with two 3-0 shutouts against Vietnamese clubs Sanest and Maseco.

Battambang Police Station, however, lost 3-1 to Maseco but managed to edge Sanest 3-2 in Friday and Saturday encounters.

The coach of Maseco, however, refused to validate the results, claiming the Vietnamese players had failed to play to their best.

Despite some victories in friendlies during the lead in to the 2011 SEA Games, Cambodia were blanked 3-0 in four of their preliminary matches in Indonesia against regional rivals such as Thailand, Indonesia, Myanmar and Vietnam.

They were also beaten 3-1 by Malaysia. “We lost before because we were too new to the last SEA Games, but now we’ve trained very well and done good warm-up games against Vietnamese teams.

So I hope we’ll get better result in the SEA Games,” Cambodia coach Pou Sarak told the Post. Cambodia will meet the gold medal Thailand, Malaysia and Myanmar in Group A at the Zayar Thiri Indoor Stadium in Naypyidaw from December 13.

Boxers Wary of Bruising SEA Games Encounters

CAMBODIA UPDATED. Cambodia’s team of fighters primed for the English boxing competition at the 27th SEA Games in Myanmar next month have expressed their concern at the standard of the opposition following their return home from a 37-day training camp held in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

Six boxers, including 2011 SEA Games bronze medalists Svay Ratha and Choun Sokleng (Vorn Viva), were accompanied in Thailand by coach Ven Sophal.

“After the friendly boxing tournament with national boxers from Thailand and Malaysia on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday (last week), we saw that our rivals were better than us, especially at 64kg and 69kg weight classes,” the coach told the Post, adding that Cambodia’s strongest rivals at the SEA Games would be from Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam.

However, Svay Ratha said he was better prepared than two years ago, when he made the podium in Indonesia. “I will get a medal if my opponent in the opening fight is not Thai or Filipino,” he said.

The six fighters heading to Myanmar include Svay Ratha (64kg), Choun Sokleng (81kg), Phal Sophon (60kg), Long Lamda (56kg), Srun Pisey (69kg) and Nat Saknin (49kg).

We Want to Reach the Semi-Finals at Myanmar's SEA Games

Review the Interview with Football Federation Cambodia (FFC) Technical Director May Tola.

Stagnation is the most appropriate word to define the status quo of Cambodian football. The men’s national team of the former Khmer Empire has lost all the matches played in 2012 and 2013, and its most recent results have been a 0-7 thumping by Turkmenistan and a 0-8 annihilation from Southeast Asian counterparts Philippines. Also, Cambodia’s position in the FIFA Ranking is currently at 199, the team’s lowest ever.

However, the governing body of local football, the FFC (Football Federation Cambodia), is eager to reverse the trend and give disappointed Cambodian fans something to cheer about in the near future, especially by growing up local talents who could help the national team’s cause.

We spoke to FFC technical director May Tola to discover what’s in store for Cambodian football in the years to come.

How is Cambodian football progressing at grassroots level? Does the FFC have any plan to increase the number of areas where it’s currently played?

Grassroots football in Cambodia is increasing popularity and it’s played more and more by community, schools as well as NGOs. We see that every year, more football activities/events have been organized by the aforementioned institutions to provide opportunities for children and people to take part in football. In our long term development of football, grassroots is one of our top priorities. We will be increasing activities mainly at provincial level and at schools to promote the game among children and adults.

Cambodia has a great percentage of youth people. Do you think their interest is growing in these last years?

FFC Technical Director, May Tola

Yes, there are more youth teams and players who play football officially and unofficially each year.

Where do you think Cambodian football should improve most in this moment?

We will have to reform our competitions structure and format to provide more opportunities to play football nation-wide. In this moment, because of limited infrastructures (stadiums, pitches etc), football is more organized and played in Phnom Penh, while there is a much greater number of youth footballers in all provinces and districts. We need to have more coaches, volunteers, teachers to be football educators and leaders in our community.

Which are the chances of seeing overseas-based half-Cambodian players, such as Chhunly Pagenburg of FSV Frankfurt and Colorado Rapids’ Davy Armstrong, wearing the national team’s shirt in the future?

We have been contacting Chhunly and Davy Armstrong for the last few years, but it seems that they had to give priority to their professional career in Germany and USA. We always welcome overseas-based players for Cambodia.

Do you think there are Cambodian players who could play abroad at professional level? If yes, could you name some of them?

There are some Cambodians from Australia, France that came for a trial but they have not been successful. As I don’t have much information about others, I can’t say who can or cannot play for the country. But, the fact that there are some players currently in professional leagues such as Chhunly and Davy Armstrong, means that they have good quality.

Which are Cambodia targets for the upcoming SEA Games in Myanmar?

We have to be realistic, if we set our target for the last four [the semi-finals] of the tournament and we manage to do it, then it would be an enormous victory, [it would be] historical and also a big surprise, which could always happen in football. Any target lower than this, won’t make any impression.

Why did the team perform so poorly in the last qualifiers for the 2012 Suzuki Cup and 2014 Challenge Cup? Which were the biggest problems and weaknesses in your opinion?

The problem is the quality of our league (players’ performances, level of coaching, duration of the league), which is still low compared to the [Southeast Asian] region. Another problem was the preparation of the team, which was very short and in poor conditions, and all this made the players’ spirit not very tough and stable.

Which has been the influence of politics in Cambodian football in the past? And what about now?

The influences of politics in Cambodian football have been more positive than negative. The positive thing is that politicians give more support financially, with materials and infrastructures which are needed for football. However, sometimes politicians use football for their own individual interests, circles, parties, but not in the name of the nation which should be the motto of the game.

What are your thoughts about ASEAN football in general? Do you think the region is improving in the right direction?

ASEAN football has been an additional platform to improve politics, culture, solidarity and of course football technical development as well as economic interests of its members. These benefits have been stable or gradually improving in last years.

However, recent political chaos in the world from FIFA to AFC and all the other continents has influenced ASEAN spirit and solidarity. But I’m confident that, by believing in the good nature of experienced people in ASEAN now and in the future, they can agree with each other for the development of the game and share it with all the members.

Money Problem Plague Cambodia SEA Games Contingent

Financial problems have thrown a big spanner into Cambodia’s preparations for the SEA Games in Myanmar.

“The SEA Games is coming. We haven’t even received our salary for the last two months. My students and I just need our salaries,” said an official from the swimming team.

But while unpaid salaries continue to be an issue, it has not stopped the National Olympic Council of Cambodia (NOCC) from increasing the number of delegates to the 27th SEA Games from Dec 11-22.

“With government support, we have increased the total number of delegates from 230 at the previous SEA Games (in Indonesia) to 264, with participation in 22 sports,” said NOCC general secretary Vath Chamroeun.

“We are targeting a minimum of 10 gold medals.”

PHNOM PENH (5 Sept 2013) – Expect Cambodia to be a lot more competitive at this year’s SEA Games in Myanmar following the decision of the Football Federation of Cambodia (FFC) to include French-born Thierry Chantha Bin, who plays for Phnom Penh Crown FC.

Other than Thierry, the FFC have also included other French-bred imports Boris Kok and Dani Kouch as well as Cambodian-American Alex Kem in the list of 26 players who will train under Cambodian chief coach Lee Tae Hoon.

“We are not the favorite for sure. We have nothing to lose, so let’s see,” said Thierry.

“This is really important to me, as my first goal by coming and playing in Cambodia was to join the national team. All the efforts I have been through this season were worth it.”

Prior to the SEA Games on 11-22 December, the team will be playing in the BIDC Cup in November in Phnom Penh.
