Myanmar Football Coach Axed After SEA Games Exit

MYANMAR UPDATED. MYANMAR Under-23 coach Park Sung-hwa has paid the price for failing to guide the team to the semi-finals of the SEA Games football competition.

He was sacked on Tuesday.

According to the local media, Myanmar Football Federation U Zaw Zaw fired the South Korean after the defeat.

The host nation were knocked out of the competition after losing to Indonesia 1-0 in their final Group B match on Monday. Alfin Ismail converted a penalty in the 35th minute to enable Indonesia to finish second and accompany group leaders Thailand into the last four.

Indonesia and Myanmar are tied on seven points each after four matches but Indonesia advanced based on their head-to-head record. This is in accordance with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) competition rules.

The local media reported that disgruntled fans had burned their T-shirts and signboards outside the stadium after the match to voice dissatisfaction over the defeat.

The former South Korean international said that he was not aware of the head-to-head rule but would take responsibility for the defeat.

“It was my fault ... I take full responsibility for this defeat. I only learnt about the rule after the game,” he said at the post-match press conference.

“I am sorry for not attending any briefing or meeting before the game.”
